HOW HEARING AIDS CAN HELP YOUR TINNITUS

Why are hearing aids effective in managing tinnitus?

There is a strong association between hearing loss and tinnitus, with 70% of those with tinnitus also having some degree of hearing loss. Wearing hearing aids will first and foremost assist you with the difficulties caused by hearing loss (e.g. communication in noisy environments), but can also be very effective in decreasing the perception of tinnitus.

Hearing aids increase the sound stimulation sent to the cochlea (inner ear) and ultimately the brain.

One of the strongest theories on how tinnitus works, is because the brain tries to overcompensate for ‘missing sound’ caused by hearing loss. By wearing hearing aids and bringing that missing sound back, the brain no longer needs to compensate – reducing or eliminating tinnitus.

Hearing aids may mask or partially mask tinnitus.

This means that your attention is drawn away from the tinnitus, which may also reduce its bothersome nature.

Hearing aids reduce the contrast between tinnitus and silence.

That contrast draws your focus to the tinnitus, which can now be avoided.

Efficient tinnitus management

Widex hearing aids are particularly effective in managing tinnitus, because of key technological decisions in how we process sound. For example, Widex hearing aids are known for providing access to all sounds – the soft sounds are audible, the normal speech sounds are intelligible and loud sounds are not uncomfortable. Seeing as the soft sounds are audible, it also reduces silence – thereby reducing the contrast between silence and your tinnitus. You might find that you need more sound stimulation, so you can also have hearing aid programs with the soothing and relaxing Widex Zen and SoundRelax™ tones.

Tailored to your needs

Tinnitus is usually most pronounced within or near the frequency range of the hearing loss. By treating the hearing loss with hearing aids, the tinnitus is also positively impacted. Using hearing aids with as broad a frequency bandwidth as possible, like Widex hearing aids, will provide the richest frequency input to the brain.

Widex hearing aids are truly individualized for your unique needs, using our Sensogram to assess your hearing while wearing hearing aids and accounting for your unique ear canal acoustics with our TruAcoustics technology. Not to mention that your hearing care professional can also adjust your Widex Zen and SoundRelax tones in terms of tempo (speed), pitch and volume to your exact preferences.
